Fontana delle 99 Cannelle
Piazza Duomo is the biggest and most important square in L'Aquila. The square is 140 meters long and 70 meters wide and is one of the biggest city squares in the whole Italy. It is also the heart from religious point of view as you can find the 'Cattedrale dei Santi Giorgio e Massimo' (Duomo) and the church 'Chiesa di Santa Maria del Suffragio'. On the side of the square you can find several restaurants or why not eat on of the best gelato in Italy.
In the 15th century L'Aaquila was a part of Kingdom of Naples and when L'Aquila later was occupied by the Spanish conquerors the spaniards decided to build this fortress to control the rebellious Aquilans. Until the earthquake the Fortress hosted the National Museum of Abruzzo but you can still today visit the Mammuth that resides inside one of the chambers in the castello.
When you visit the fountain you have to count all of the spouts. Are they really 99? The legend says that L'Aquila was founded by 99 castles nearby and all castles had to build each 1 church, 1 square and 1 fountain.
